What if today were the last day of your life?

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

James 4:13-17

Death. the constant companion. It is always possible for us to die at any moment, in a minute, a year or 20 years. There is always the possibility we will die and disappear like vapor. Everything is temporary, we may not think of it in our day to day life, we may push it aside and ignore it. Yet sometimes it is beautiful. For a christian at least because bodily death does not mean spiritual death. We will live on in heaven with God where he will wipe away every tear (Revelation 21:4) and it also says in the bible that the dead will rise again when Jesus comes again (John 5:28-29) with new bodies. But the paint of the text is that we should live like there is no tomorrow, that is to say live as if Jesus will come soon as the church has believed for nearly 2000 years. We need to be like the servant who waits for its master with a lamp because he does not know when the master will come back and if the master finds you sleeping it will not be good for you (Mark 13:34–37 and Luke 12:35–38). But I do not know how strict God will be in the end when the disciples fall asleep in Gethsemane the night Jesus was betrayed they were admonished (Matthew 26:36–46 and Mark 14:32–42) but if the apostles can’t be saved then who can be saved? It is good to think that we should be on our toes so we do our best to be on the safe side. Yet I do not believe anyone can keep up the facade of always doing what is right as we are after all, everyone of us, sinners. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

What would you do if you thought today was your last day on earth?
