Once when Jesus read for the prophet of Isaiah when he proclaimed that the place in the scriptures had been fulfilled. That is he proclaimed a year of the lord’s favor. Skipping the part about the day of vengeance because that hadn’t come to pass yet. This is part of what he read:
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
Isaiah 61:1-2
Remember he didn’t say anything about a day of vengeance even though it said in Isaiah. What could this mean? I have heard two explanations. One is that the year of favor is still going on and the day of vengeance is judgment day. Or you could see it as a physical year of favor. Like in the old testament when every 7th year was a year of rest that very well could have occurred at the time of Jesus ministry. But if it was a physical year then the physical day of vengeance would surely have already been right? I tend to lean towards the version that we are still in a year of the Lord’s favor.
What do you think? Are we still in the year of favor?
